I can't see the cat
Windows hides the icons of new apps behind the "^" on the taskbar. Bring the cat out in either of these ways:
- Click "
^" and drag the cat icon onto the taskbar - Turn on "Neko meter" in Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Other system tray icons
The app shows the same notice once, the first time it starts.
How do I bring back a hidden cat?
When you choose "Hide the cat", the cat becomes invisible but its spot on the taskbar stays.
- Right-click the spot where the cat was (it looks empty) and choose "Show the cat"
- If you can't find the spot, start "Neko meter" again from the Start menu and the cat comes back
How do I turn "Start with Windows" on or off?
- Microsoft Store version: right-click the cat and choose "Start with Windows…". Windows opens Settings > Apps > Startup, where you can turn "Neko meter" on or off
- Other versions: right-click the cat and choose "Start with Windows" to check or uncheck it
The cat sleeps all the time
The cat tends to sleep at these times. Nothing is wrong.
- While charging (plug in the charger and it flicks its ears, then curls up to sleep)
- At night (23:00–6:00)
- When you haven't touched the keyboard or mouse for ten minutes (it wakes and stretches when you come back)
- When the battery is below 5%
The cat keeps running
It runs when your PC is busy (CPU or GPU usage above 60% for ten seconds), so it also runs while you game or export a video. When the heavy work ends, it sits. If the PC stays busy for a long time, it sits now and then to catch its breath.
Can I change what makes the cat run?
Yes. Right-click the cat and choose from "The cat runs on":
- CPU or GPU, whichever is higher (the default)
- CPU
- GPU (to watch only the GPU while you game)
- Memory (to know when memory is tight)
This only changes what makes the cat run. The numbers in the tooltip stay the same.
Does it work on a desktop PC without a battery?
Yes. The power reactions (plugging in, unplugging, battery level) are skipped, and the cat reacts to how busy your PC is, whether you are away, and the time of day.
Can I see numbers (battery level, CPU usage)?
Yes. Hover the pointer over the cat icon to see CPU, memory and GPU usage, the battery level with an estimate of the time left, free space on the C: drive, and network download and upload speed. Right-click the cat and choose "Today's history" to open a small window that graphs today's CPU, GPU, memory, battery and network speed as per-minute averages, with a band showing when the cat ran or slept.
What is the app name shown while the cat runs?
While the cat is running, hover over the icon to see the name of the app using the most CPU or memory right now (for example: Top: chrome.exe (CPU 31%)). The same line is added to the notification you get when the cat keeps running.
- The name is only displayed; it is never saved or sent. Window titles and open files are not read
- To turn it off, untick "Show the heaviest app" in the right-click menu. The name is then neither shown nor measured
Is today's history saved anywhere?
No. The values are kept only in the app's memory; they are not written to a file or sent anywhere. They are cleared when the date changes or when you quit the app. The window closes when you close it and never opens at startup.
When do I get notifications, and can I turn them off?
For the times you are not looking at the cat, Windows notifications tell you:
- When the battery is low: once each when it drops below 20% and 10% while not charging. Plugging in the charger resets this
- When the cat keeps running: once when the cat has run for five minutes straight on the load you chose, saying what is busy and how much (for example CPU 92%). Not again for 30 minutes after things calm down
- When C: is running low: once when free space drops below 10% or 10 GB. Not again until it is back above both 15% and 15 GB
Right-click the cat and untick any of them under "Notifications". Each one can be turned off on its own.
How do I change the display language?
Right-click the cat and choose from "Language". There are 13: 日本語, English, 简体中文, 繁體中文, 한국어, Español, العربية, Français, Deutsch, Português (Brasil), Italiano, Русский and Türkçe. At first the app follows your Windows language (English if yours is not on the list).
How do I uninstall it?
Right-click "Neko meter" in the Start menu and choose "Uninstall", or remove it from Settings > Apps. Its saved settings (whether the cat is hidden, the language and so on) are removed too.
